Why are we leaving Marktplaats?

Over the past year, Marktplaats has repeatedly and without notice made changes. This forced us to constantly adapt our way of working. That cost a lot of time and energy, but we have always done so because both we and our fellow collectors were used to our methodology.

Recently, however, changes have been implemented that we can no longer resolve with a workaround. We are no longer receiving emails about bids, overbids, and retracted bids.

Although bids are sometimes visible in the Marktplaats messaging module, this is unreliable and unworkable with our volume. CoinsAndMore receives an average of 350 bids per week, with approximately 40 overbids, and peaks of up to 700 bids and 120 overbids per week.

All these bids are normally automatically processed in our self-developed cloud bidding system, which reads the Marktplaats emails and allocates reservations to the highest bidders every Sunday at 7:00 PM.

Manual processing is not feasible

Last week was the first week without bidding emails. We then had to manually check and enter almost 4,000 advertisements and over 3,000 Marktplaats messages. That meant approximately 60 hours of work (2 people). This is doable once, but weekly it is simply not feasible.

Again this week, no bidding emails have arrived.

Our own webshop

Fortunately, last year we put a lot of energy into our new own webshop. Last month, it was tested by a number of fellow collectors. Although not everything is perfect yet, the test results provide enough confidence to — partly due to the problems with Marktplaats — launch the webshop earlier than planned.

This discount does not apply to silver coins, because the silver price has not yet been adjusted to the current high silver rate. This makes it extra interesting right now.
