S22-VAT-0393 Vatican 20 Lire UNC 1973 KM120
A beautiful aluminium bronze circulation coin from Vatican City, issued during the pontificate of Pope Paul VI (Giovanni Battista Montini, 1963–1978) — the pope who presided over the close of the Second Vatican Council and guided the Church through a period of profound renewal.
Obverse: The papal coat of arms of Paul VI with the date to the right. Inscribed PAVLVS VI P.M. A.IX (Paul VI, Pontifex Maximus, year of his pontificate). Engraved by Tomas Gismondi.
Reverse: A red deer (Cervus elaphus) standing beside a waterfall, with CITTA' DEL VATICANO above and denomination L.20 below. In Christian symbolism, the stag drinking from a spring represents the soul's longing for baptismal purification and the defeat of evil. Engraved by Tomas Gismondi.
