A lightweight aluminium 5 Lire of the Italian Republic, struck at the Rome Mint in 1986. This elegant design by Giuseppe Romagnoli has been celebrated for its nautical imagery and is one of the most pleasing coins in the Italian lira series.

Obverse: A rudder — symbolising Italy's seafaring tradition and maritime heritage. Legend REPVBBLICA ITALIANA with the designer's name ROMAGNOLI. Engraved by Pietro Giampaoli.

Reverse: The denomination 5 to the left of the date, above a leaping dolphin — a playful and iconic image unique to this denomination.
