Dutch Treasures: Tokens & Penningen from the Netherlands

Posted by Bas Bruinekool on

Hallo collectors!

This week we are shining a spotlight on one of the most fascinating and often overlooked areas of numismatics: Dutch tokens and penningen from the Netherlands.

While most collectors focus on circulation coins, tokens tell a completely different story — the story of everyday Dutch commerce, parking systems, amusement arcades, corporate anniversaries, and local businesses that no longer exist. Each piece is a small time capsule of Netherlands life.

We have just added a new batch of 30 pieces from our Dutch collection, starting from just €0.15.

🅿️ Parking Tokens — A Piece of Pre-Digital Holland

Before contactless payments, Dutch cities ran on metal. Our collection includes several VNP Parkeersystemen BV parking tokens (catalogued under Kooij PS099), used across the Netherlands to access parking garages and lots. Compact, functional, and surprisingly scarce today — most were simply discarded once the systems were replaced.

🎰 Amusement Tokens — Voor Amusement Alleen

"For amusement only" — that is what it says on a number of our Kooij-catalogued amusement tokens (AS006, AS021, AS120B). These were issued by Dutch amusement halls and arcades throughout the latter half of the 20th century. Venues like Moons Bodegraven and Automaten Amusement had their own branded tokens — and almost no one saved them.

☕ Corporate & Brand Penningen

One of our favourite categories: brand-issued tokens. The Douwe Egberts series from De Meern (Kooij KB110) is a prime example — coffee company tokens used in vending machines and staff canteens. We have multiple variants. Similarly, the ABN Parkeer Penning shows how major Dutch banks once issued their own parking media.

🏆 Commemorative Medals

Not everything is transactional. Our "Nederland 35 Jaar Bevrijd" (1980) medal commemorates 35 years of Dutch liberation after World War II — a meaningful piece of post-war Dutch history graded VF. Likewise, the Amsterdam Mokum 700 token celebrates Amsterdam's 700th anniversary.

💡 Why Collect Dutch Tokens?

  • Affordable entry point — most pieces are under €1
  • Catalogued & documented — the Kooij catalogue is the definitive Dutch token reference
  • Historically rich — local businesses, national events, forgotten brands
  • Low competition — this niche is still very much under the radar internationally
